Patients Discontinuing Anti-Obesity Jabs Put On Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Than People Using Diet and Exercise

Weight management often requires ongoing approaches.

New research indicates that patients who discontinue blockbuster slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt conventional lifestyle regimens.

Research printed in a leading medical journal points out that while obese people often shed substantial amounts of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass is regained at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"Users purchasing such medications must be cognizant of the risk of rapid rebound weight gain when the treatment ends," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of recovery suggests a return to original weight in about 18 months.

Comparing Treatments

The study, which looked at 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the results of these new drugs with other pills.

Scientists note that individuals who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone usually experience a more gradual creep back—approximately 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.

Explaining the Quick Rebound

Nutrition scientists believe the mode of action of the drugs is key to understanding the accelerated rebound.

The injections imitate a natural hormone called GLP-1, which helps regulate hunger.

"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 concentrations far above than normal could lead to the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and could reduce sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.

"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement means hunger is uncontrolled, making binge eating a significant risk."

An Ongoing Disease?

The NHS recommend the jabs for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.

Professionals say that, due to the significant potential of weight regain, the treatment might need to be ongoing.

This opinion is supported by drug manufacturers, who say that the findings "highlight the long-term character of excess weight," comparing it to managing diseases like high blood pressure.

Patient Testimonies

Individuals who have stopped the jabs explain a sudden return of appetite.

"It felt as if a switch that goes on and you become starving," said a patient.

This challenge is exacerbated if patients have not adopted lasting lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.

Growing Interest

Survey data show that a significant number of adults in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with interest remaining high.

  • Use is more common among women compared to men.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
  • Many access the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Finally, researchers stress that while GLP-1 drugs are potent agents for weight loss, they are not a magic solution and maintained weight loss likely depends on combined behavioural changes.
