EU Could Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Official Says

The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the US against five Europeans working on combating online hate and misinformation, an EU official stated.

EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions targeted figures that were at the heart of campaigns to introduce legislation governing US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in criticizing the move.

The bans were enacted this week against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, including Germany and the United Kingdom.

A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation

This European legislation is seen by US officials as a form of censorship, while European leaders contend the regulations are necessary to control hate speech and disinformation.

This disagreement threatens to become part of a much broader existing cultural and political conflict involving the current US administration and European institutions.
