England along with Wales Drawn Together for 2027 Rugby World Cup in Australia

Draw event for the 2027 tournament
The group draw was overseen by rugby legends such as two-time World Cup winner Dan Carter.

England together with their Welsh counterparts will face off in the same pool for the 2027 RWC, promising a major pool stage encounter in the tournament Down Under. Completing the group in Group F by the Tongan Ikale Tahi and Zimbabwe.

This draw recalls their infamous clash in the group phase of the 2015 World Cup, where Wales' victory at England's home ground played a part in the English team's shock group stage elimination.

Other Notable Group Pairings

The Irish alongside the Scots also share a group once again, replicating the situation from the France 2023 tournament. On that occasion, Ireland claimed a convincing victory, with Scotland failing to progress to the quarter-finals.

Los Teros and Os Lobos, who each made a strong impression as surprise packages in France, round out that Pool D.

Significantly, the victors of these two groups cannot meet holders and top-ranked South Africa until the final, presuming the Springboks win their own group.

Tournament Implications

Should the groups play out in line with the current global standings, further top favourites like New Zealand and France would also be kept apart from the likes of the English and Ireland until the championship decider.

In that scenario, Argentina would be the other highly-seeded nation on that half of the elimination bracket as England and Ireland.

Tournament Hosts Face Blockbuster Fixture

Hosts the Wallabies have been drawn alongside their trans-Tasman rivals and three-time winners the All Blacks in Pool A.

The Wallabies will kick off the World Cup in Perth on 1 October 2027 in a blockbuster match designed to launch the competition.

Elsewhere, reigning champions the Springboks have been paired with Italy, the Lelos and the Oaks. France are grouped with the Brave Blossoms, 2031 hosts the United States and Manu Samoa.

Expanded Format for 2027

Argentina will take on Fiji, Spain and Canada as the World Cup grows to 24 teams from the 20 who took part in France.

The 2027 tournament will feature a last-16 stage for the very first time in Rugby World Cup existence.

Although the victor of Pool F may avoid some of the game's heavyweights initially, they will have to face the second-placed team from Group B – probably the Italians – in the last 16.

Four of the remaining six pool winners will play a team that finished third from the initial group phase.
