Royal Air Force Typhoon jets have operated alongside France's air force in a joint strike on an hidden munitions depot in Syria employed by the Daesh militant organization, per a report from the UK's MoD.

The site, pinpointed through reconnaissance, was assessed as housing weapons and explosive materials, the release indicated, and was situated in hills just north of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our fighter planes used precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to hit a number of entry passages down to the facility... initial indications are that the objective was successfully hit," the MoD said.

There was no sign of any civilian impact in the strike on Saturday evening and every plane involved returned safely, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon fighters were assisted by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

IS - alternatively referred to as the so-called Islamic State - imposed extremist governance over significant areas in Iraq and Syria until 2019.

"This strike shows British leadership, and resolve to operate in unison with our allies, to stamp out any resurgence of IS and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the region," the British Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary said.

British military aircraft have performed overwatch operations over Syria to "forestall any attempted resurgence" of the group subsequent to its military defeat at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I must thank the personnel of our armed forces involved in this mission for their expertise and their valour," he added. "They were among a great many British troops on duty over Christmas and New Year. This operation, to remove militants who threaten our way of life, demonstrates how UK forces are prepared to act, continuously, protecting the UK within its borders and powerful internationally."

In December, the American forces executed what it called a "large-scale strike" against Daesh sites in Syria, subsequent to an assault killed two US troops and a local interpreter in Palmyra.

The UN estimates IS still has roughly 5-7 thousand fighters in both countries.
