A minimum of thirteen people killed and 98 injured in rail accident in the nation of Mexico.

A tragic train derailment in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel opposition criticisms regarding the pace and management of the country's major public works projects.

The crash took place on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a route built to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was intended to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring economic development in the area.

“We will rigorously clarify the reasons behind this incident,” affirmed the head of state.

The official reported that, of the some 250 passengers on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in grave condition. The official noted plans to travel to Oaxaca to meet those involved.

Key Undertaking of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone public works project of the former leader, whose time in office ended the year before. This rail line was a hallmark of his leadership's economic goals for the southern region.

Another multi-billion dollar train initiative from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the wider plan to revitalize the economy of a comparatively poorer part of the country.

Building Management and Risks Apprehensions

The construction of both rail lines was supervised by the army, marking a notable growth of its responsibilities in national infrastructure. They were completed at an fast-tracked speed, surpassing expectations to be at least partly opened before the end of that presidency.

However, this accelerated timeline had concurrently raised ongoing apprehensions over operational security.

  • Sunday's accident was the third event on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This encompasses an prior accident this month when a train struck a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had a couple of non-fatal derailments.

Appeals for Investigation and Halt

In the wake of the disaster, the leader of a primary political opposition demanded an immediate halt in the construction and operation of all similar projects.

This halt was suggested until the completion of a thorough independent investigation. The party declared that the tragedy "calls for prompt explanations."

In response, the president insisted that the train had been operating in total accordance with all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the development and operation of these vital undertakings.
